Male Spirit Retreat Follow-up

Male Spirit

To be alive: not just the carcass
But the spark
That’s crudely put, but…
If we’re not supposed to dance,
Why all this music?

— GREGORY ORR

To Be Alive – A Male Spirit Retreat

A Male Spirit Zoom Retreat took place on April 10, 2021 from 10:00am to 2:00pm with Joe Kilikevice at Shem Center and Steve Miller in Vermillion, South Dakota and with the technical help of Carson Lee also in South Dakota.

The title and theme for the retreat was inspired by this simple Zen-like poem.

To be alive: not just the carcass
But the spark
That’s crudely put, but…
If we’re not supposed to dance,
Why all this music?

- Gregory Orr

Some 35 men signed up, both veterans of Male Spirit retreats and newcomers. The Dances of Universal Peace, an identifying feature of our retreats, were adapted for our use on Zoom, using movements we each did in our own spaces. Steve brought his musical skills and creativity that included a new chant and dance based on the words in the poem, “To Be Alive.” The rousing “Well I Had To Come This Long Way,” song and dance Steve Miller created was also used. Hear a recording of this song on the Male Spirit page on this website.

From the opening “Circle of Respect” to the closing circle of final looks at the postage stamp sized on-screen images of participants, and with Rumi’s poem, “Don’t Worry About Saving These Songs” to bless our leave-taking, we are now left with the time-released blessings that are “the spark” keeping us alive.

Another Male Spirit Zoom retreat is planned, perhaps sometime in the Fall. Keep your eye on the “Programs” page on this website. We are grateful for this enthusiastic response to this retreat.

Namaste,

Joe Kilikevice
