Dominican Order of Friars Chicago Assembly 2022
An Assembly of some 150 Dominican Friars of the Central USA Province of the international Order of Preachers gathered in Chicago August 8-11, 2022. Matters of common concern are considered periodically by members of the Order to examine, evaluate, update and improve the life and mission of our religious order.
Our Brother Gerard, elected in 2019 by a General Chapter of representatives of the friars of our international Order joined us for this Assembly. He is the first Filipino to be elected to this leadership position since the Order was founded in 1216 by Dominic de Guzman in Toulouse, France in response to a then desperate need for informed preaching. against a heresy which denied the dignity of our humanity. There are 5,265 friars in our international Order today. He is also a spiritual leader of Dominican women religious and the laity who are also part of the Order’s extended membership.
Our brother Gerrard was a delight to be with. We enjoyed his wisdom, story telling, sense of humor and genuine respect and love for us all. I can assure you that the smile captured in the photo above is genuine and ever present. We were able to have a brief conversation about Shem Center during our brief time together.
